50 States or 1 Country

In just 30 days, the United States will hold its presidential election. It’s often said that the country is divided into two opposing camps.

I propose that a fundamental dividing line is that half of US citizens desire one overarching government, while the other half prefer their state to be that government.

The current arrangement, based on a 250-year-old Constitution, has given us a republic of 50 democratic states. However, this union is not truly democratic. The inequities of the Electoral College, Senate, and other elements are addressed in another post.

Small voting swings in individual states are controlling the direction of the United States. The original balance between local state rights and federal rights is no longer effective due to economic, demographic, scientific, technological, environmental, and cultural changes.

I advocate for a new Constitutional convention, even though it may result in a smaller United States with some states opting for separate governments.

Do you want a federal government that represents the country’s majority or a federal government that represents the majority in 50 separate states?

Do you value 50 states more than 1 country?
